A Brief History Of The Presbyterians offers laity and clergy a succinct and thorough introduction to the history of Presbyerianism. I purchased this book because it was a required text for a class I am taking. While I found it informative, it is also clearly out of date. Much has happened to this denomination since this book was published in 1994. It is an informative book and is historically accurate to 1994. In some instances, the author left chronology to explore a movement, then later had to return to the chronology. Sticking to the chronological events instead of diverting seems a better choice for me.
A good book not only for Presbyterian history but also church history. It's short, but dense in a good way!
Smylie is one of the most respected teachers in his field. He has taken a work in progress by other authors over 100 year period and added thoughtful and accurate material. Must read for Presbyterian Clergy. Wouldn't hurt for Officers in training to read also.
This as a great lesson in the history of the Christian religion starting at 400 AD to present.
Mr Smylie is a great historian and has presented a grand history of our denomination. I was working on a research project and found this resource to he very insightful. I would recommended it to anyone who wants to know about Presbyterians.
Good book, some what liberal in the outlook of where the Presbyterian church is headed. I know of PCUSA ministers who don't act af if they are ministers, I suppose they want to be "one of the guys!"
As a lifelong Presbyterian, I have been seriously lacking in knowing its historical background. I found this to be a good quick way for me to begin a journey in understanding the roots of my denomination.
For years, I've known Jim Smylie, who was one of my son's professors at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA.As a matter of interest, I will use some of the material in this book when I teach my adult Sunday School Class.
