Author Christopher Johnston takes you across America, peering behind the scenes in the key cities that are leading the way by building survivor centered, trauma informed systems. He brings the players and places to life, dissects their efforts, and ultimately shares their best practices. There is no other book that covers all these pieces of the global #MeToo conversation. This is a significant contribution to the current literature. Shattering Silences should be welcomed as a thoughtfully written guidebook that can help us navigate forward, its lessons valuable across the country and around the globe.
I think what is most helpful and effective with this book is the variety of perspectives offered by the author. The reader receives so many great insights into the realities of rape kit back logs as well as obstacles that assault prevention advocates face. Christopher Johnston did a great job shining a light on sexual assault victims who have become true survivors and the difference they are trying to make, so others don't have to suffer the same abuse in the future. This is such a great resource - highly recommend this book!

Having read Jon Krakauer's "Missoula" earlier this year, and as the #metoo movement unfolds through the media and in the streets, this book seems incredibly timely to me and should be a book read by everyone. One might assume that this would just be book for those who have survived rape or sexual assault but, in fact, the investigative reporting reads more as a presentation on how a number of communities have addressed the untested rape kit problem by admitting there was a problem, working their way through the backlog of rape kits, working with complimentary supportive services and utilizing what they've learned to promote action across the U.S. I found this book to be a fascinating look at the legal side, the personal impact (with stories from a few rape/assault survivors) and passionate individuals who have dedicated their lives to helping survivors and their friends and family. While there is still a lot of work to do, Johnston makes a clear case that there is hope. After reading "Missoula" (who Johnston also refers to in this book), I felt sad and overwhelmed by the weight of a systemic issue and I think that "Shattering Silences" takes the next step towards recognizing the positive forward momentum. It’s well worth a read.
A well-written book that takes a compassionate view of a very timely subject. The author has done a great job of blending a compelling narrative and thorough research.
Positive and enlightening look at what is being done to address rape and assault. The information about technology advances is interesting. But the personal stories of victims, responders and advocates is what made it all compelling. Let's face it. We all know someone who can find hope reading this book.
