From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Excerpts from 15-year-old Becca's diary interspersed with third-person narrative combine to produce a tale of high adventure, intrigue, and science fiction along the China coast in 1920. Following their parents' mysterious disappearance in the remote Sinkiang region, Becca and her younger brother, Doug, are sent from their home in India to live with their sea-captain uncle, whose research vessel they board in Shanghai. Through their inquisitiveness and spying, they learn of a secret society that may have had something to do with their parents' fate and of a very volatile substance called zoridium that their uncle is trying to retrieve from an evil warlord. Their curiosity leads to their capture and captivity on his island fortress–the site of a rousing showdown that sets the stage for the second volume in this trilogy. Memorable, over-the-top characters and an often unbelievable plot are united with fascinating sidebars and graphics, such as short biographies of people like Bohr and Einstein, archival photographs of old Shanghai, vintage newspaper clippings, a chart of the Morse code, diagrams of inventions, or Doug's sketches of the action scenes. Several confidential full-color pull-outs provide detailed descriptions of the various vessels and of an ancient fighting order, the Sujing Quantou. Some readers may pore over the details in this novel; others will simply appreciate the comic adventure.–Diane S. From Booklist

Gr. 8--11. The first book of the Guild Trilogy quickly and deftly plunges readers into an exotic corner of the first quarter of the twentieth century. Teenage siblings Rebecca and Douglas run through a series of adventures in a submarine, on the streets of Shanghai, and among pirates. They are bold, inquisitive, and creative, and they leave behind for readers'inspection numerous documents of their adventures, including Becca's diary, Doug's sketches, and such visual artifacts as maps and photos. First-time novelist Mowll spins a heady yarn, and his characters have some distinctive traits: Doug's speech, for example, is peppered with the term lethal. The reproductions, which are highly detailed, look suitably authentic and will have great appeal for readers who thrive on schematics and puzzles. By the end of the story, Becca and Doug have survived a variety of terrifying exploits and are still in search of their missing parents. A sequel will find a ready audience. Lots of nice illustrations, the author clearly researched the period and setting. The goofy gravity-control maguffin is presented interestingly. However, I've never really liked the "secret powerful organization centuries old, with secret technology and secret magic, secretly super-rich and able to control governments ... and they're the good guys" meme. The organization has secret ninja friends, secret fighting techniques ... the author doesn't want the protagonists to have negative or critical thoughts about their organization, I suppose. I got this (and the other two) as a gift for a friend who's running a role-playing game. The background and historical information should prove useful.

A very fun and engaging story set in a time and place I know very little about. The artwork, fold-outs and gee-wiz aspects of the story are especially well done. Some of the writing is a little flat; not up to the standards set by the artwork. I bought the book for me and am very pleased to report that one of my boys (age 11) has picked it up and is quite engrossed.

This book was well loved by 9 year old from whom it was a gift. Very fun read for him and me.

I enjoyed this story but I felt it was a bit rushed. I wish more time had been taken in each chapter with character and other details before the reader is thrown headlong into adventures. I almost felt like I was reading an abridged version of a much longer book. However I did like the maps, diagrams and photos.

This young adult book by Joshua Mowll is the first of a trilogy, although it can be read as an independent story. It can be described as a cross between Alex Rider, Indiana Jones, and The Da Vinci Code.Set in 1920s, it features two teenage siblings aged 13 & 15, Bec and Doug McKenzie. Their parents have disappeared, and they find themselves under the care of their uncle on his ship the Expedient. But what strange resource is the ship engaged with? They begin uncovering more and more secrets, and soon find themselves in the middle of fast paced action involving a pirate warlord, powerful weapons, a secret Chinese society, and exciting gun battles. The story is deliberately over-the-top, which will appeal to teens especially. A unique feature of the book is how it purports to be the result of research discovered by the author, Joshua Mowll, some 80 years later. All kinds of elaborate diagrams, photos, maps, documents, and illustrations are included, to give this a sense of being faux-history, and these visual elements really do add to the appeal. The story line is quite fast paced and suspenseful, although at times it felt a bit flat, and I was disappointed to come across a few instances of blasphemy and language like "hell". Despite some weaknesses, it's still a decent adventure story, and teens will probably enjoy it quite a bit. - GODLY GADFLY (April 2018)

This is possibly the best read I have had this year! Not only has Joshua Mowll created an amazing story (which harkens back to the old-time radio programs such as Jack Armstrong, Speed Gibson of the International Secret Police or The Air Adventures of Jimmy Allen), the design of the book, the fold-out illustrations, the internal illustrations are nothing short of beautiful, fascinating and inspiring, to say the very least. The story, a tale of a sister and brother who begin their adventure in the 1920s Far East, is fast-paced, action-oriented, wonderfully structured, and just 'plain fun' to read, and follows their journey with an uncle (a mysterious ship's captain) they have been shunted to while their parents have gone missing in Sinkiang region of China. The uncle, apparently the member of a secret society, leads them from one cliffhanging situation to another, and leaves the reader wanting and needing more. This is, apparently, the first of a trilogy. I've already read the story three times, and cannot get enough. And while you may find this novel in the Young Adult section of most bookstores, any adult would enjoy this fictional ride. Cheers to Mr. Mowll for this inventive book, creative style, and originally mysterious plot!

Let's begin by stating that this book is well designed. The drawings and diagrams of the vehicles, weapons, devices, etc were great. The detail was very interesting and well appreciated. That being said, I thought the story was good, but not great. I am keeping in mind the fact that this is the first book in a trilogy. I didn't find the two children's characters to be very likable. They lie and go around the adults in the quest to find their parents. I hope the characters are further developed as the story continues. The story involves the writer who inherits a house full of secret information regarding the Guild of Specialists. The writer publishes the findings from his aunts archives, and thus the story. It is a very good premise, but as I mentioned the characters are a little weak.I would recommend this books to young readers. The story is paced well and moves quickly. Some of the terms and devices described in the sotry may be a little too technical for the younger group (third graders), but I feel they would still enjoy it.

This is a Childs book, but written in a curiously adult way. Consequently the characters are to say a little one dimensional (Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, and plenty of cannon fodder in between!), but the historical/geographical context in which the book is set is extremely captivating. The presentation of the book is superb, with excellent facsimile documents and photographs, made to look like a real journal, beautiful fold out maps and schematics of Ships, and submarines, captivate me now, never mind as a child. The story is fast paced and has an authenticity to it. A real Indiana Jones meets the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Enough to stimulate the imagination of any reader.
