Solidly grounded in theories of social capital formation, this book offers practical advice on how to build communities, on earth as well as online. You can almost just copy and paste the ideas, checklists, todo lists and best practices tips, then apply them to your community-building effort. I've been a community organizer for more than 20 years, but I learned something new in each chapter. I wish I had this book sooner, would've help me avoid mistakes, and do a bunch of things better (maybe I should have reviewed this anonymously).Am particularly impressed at the courage it took to also offer this book as a free download, with a liberal Creative Commons license. The pdf format is what's most useful to me - I'm literally able to copy and paste, and shape whole sections of the book so they fit my organization's needs. I might not have bought the book if it was just a book. But because I love the pdf, I bought the ipod version (which I'll probably never use, since all I can do with it is read and, okay, click on links, but I felt obliged to pay something). Hats off to O'Reilly.
I wish this book had existed when I started out as a community manager.If you're just starting the role it can save you a lot of time in re-inventing a methodical approach to community management. As an experienced community manager it can surface ideas and approaches you might not have considered.What I found particularly useful was that it is largely "generic". It helped me better understand how my domain-specific community management skills could be better applied to other types of communities.
There's nothing more I can add to the superlatives given to this book, just that "The Art of Community" is essential reading for anyone involved with community leadership. The book is full of useful and relevant lessons, things many of us have stumbled upon but wish we'd known about in advance. There are no silver bullets for building a open source community, but Jono produces an entertaining and eloquent roadmap to the process that is applicable to any community. "The Art of Community" drives home the requirements of honesty, respect and integrity when it comes to collaboration and communication. As the book states, "Community management, leadership, and organization is still a new and young science", but at least we have a great textbook to get us started.
This book develops the principles of community management from the perspective of the manager of a big and spread community: Ubuntu Community. Based on his experience for more than a decade around online community development, Jono Bacon writes a book that is straightforward and honest in suggesting how to create and sustain online communities. In more than 350 pages, Bacon develops the journey for community managers offering strategies and a close look into the processes involved in managing a community from the initial to more consolidated stages. He begins arguing that forming communities is an art that involves understanding how people create these communities, and how they maintain involvement through continuous interactions. Then, he provides concrete strategies to plan the formation of a community, to communicate effectively, and to define processes to maintain the community in the simpler but sustainable way. He also offers clear-cut ideas on how to improve community interaction through effective tools, how to keep people engaged and willing to participate, how to measure functioning of the community, and how to govern the community and confront conflicts. Towards the end, Bacon describes ideas to develop events for the community and advice on how to hire a community manager.Bacon's direct involvement with online communities feeds the ideas in this book. There is some reference to theory, but as he states in p. 17, it is not through theory but through "sharing stories and experiences" that people can learn about communities. He uses his experience and that of people in other communities to build the components of this book, so it is clear that what community members and managers have done cannot be replaced by theory. This is a sort of tribute to people, and probably for that reason the book is written in a close and informal style, full of personal references, notes to the reader, and simple organizers. Regarding the last feature, throughout the chapters, Bacon provides TODO lists with the elements to consider in planning and sustaining a community. Suggestions of outlines for these plans, and techniques to develop the plans are also included. Every chapter begins with a quote and a personal story around the topics that are used to exemplify the ideas in the chapter. The book is sensitive about the readers and makes use of written format affordances to support them. For instance, at the end of each chapter, a summary is included to help the reader in thinking about what is relevant in that section. In addition, the book is available for free under the Creative Commons framework, and has an associated blog to collect comments and contributions from readers that could be considered in further editions.Although the book focuses in the development of online communities and how to sustain them, it is built around the very particular features of open-source operative system, which is created and developed continuously by its users. Members of this community interact to advance in the development of the system, and they find their motive in the production of knowledge about the system. Without Ubuntu Community, Ubuntu users would not be able to use the system because they rely on the group to learn about the system and to develop new features. This is a very particular feature for a community, which makes me think on the applicability of this book's suggestions to other kinds of communities. Since not all communities have emerged from the need of communication in order to achieve goals that relate to very specific enterprises, such as programming, there is a question on the transferability of the strategies advised in this book.I recommend this book if you are interested in getting a comprehensive understanding of online communities that revolve around the production of knowledge on a particular enterprise that is developed within or outside the community. You will find many good and practical resources to apply in the process of creating and maintaining the community.

In the "The Art of Community" Mr. Bacon captures pretty accurately how community projects get done. It takes the passion for people first and software freedom second. This book takes every idea that I have wanted to get around to documenting on how to setup a Linux user group and how to run a large event. It also contains a good deal that I've learned from this book concerning project management that one would never learn from a MBA textbook. This is *the* guide for the geek executive.
I just bought a Kindle DX a few days ago and was curious about the book and the shopping experience, so I bought this book. I really like the content but the Kindle version is subpar (scrambled TOC, no/missing line breaks, bullets are separated from the sentences and so on).I highly recommend to read the book if you are a community organizer or want to start a community (esp. the "To-Do" list is great), but buy the printed book or wait until the CC-licensed PDF will be available from the book's website to read it on your DX.The book itself deserves 5 stars but because the publisher has to do his homework again, I give only 4.
