This unique history of the Civil War considers the impact of nineteenth-century American secret societies on the path to as well as the course of the war. Beginning with the European secret societies that laid the groundwork for freemasonry in the United States, Mark A. Lause analyzes how the Old World's traditions influenced various underground groups and movements in America, particularly George Lippard's Brotherhood of the Union, an American attempt to replicate the political secret societies that influenced the European Revolutions of 1848.Lause traces the Brotherhood's various manifestations, including the Knights of the Golden Circle (out of which developed the Ku Klux Klan), and the Confederate secret groups through which John Wilkes Booth and others attempted to undermine the Union. This book shows how, in the years leading up to the Civil War, these clandestine organizations exacerbated existing sectional tensions and may have played a part in key events such as John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, Lincoln's election, and the Southern secession process of 1860-1861.

I purchased this book as a gift for my husband, who is a history buff. He seemed pleased with the unusual content of the book, giving yet another slant on the events of the Civil War.
This product arrived promptly and with barely and markings in the book. I am very satisfied. It is like new.
This fascinating book actually starts its journey in the late 18th Century with the proliferation of secret societies during the Enlightenment.As most people know, many of the Founding Fathers were Freemasons. The cultivation of scientific knowledge was itself, viewed as a 'cult' by religious authorities for centuries in Europe, so like the two ends of charged wires, sparks flew back and forth between ideas of political(and/or spiritual)and scientific liberation. (Read, 'The Invention of Air'- Johnson)People, groups, books invisible to modern Americans assumed a much larger role in the actual life of 19th century Americans; discover the social forms that people created to bridge the gap between overt political power and individual vision.The book may seem too exotic to many readers of Civil War history. The author stays very evenly on track with his stated topic.Individual biographies may already contain more in depth information about how influential these groups were, but we see here the 'lubricant' of freedom of thought as visionaries, bigots, militants, grapple with established authority.Talk about 6 degrees! Marx, Greeley, Dana and Lincoln. But then, The Pope, Confederate purchasing agent Maury, Emperor Maximilian and Jefferson Davis. (See, 'World on Fire' - Foreman) To really understand the American Civil War, it must be put in the context of world history.We meet George Lippard, a friend of Edgar Allen Poe's, both of whom were convinced of the existence of high level, 'Eyes Wide Shut' sex/drugs corruption.All the more amazing then that people like Lincoln, Grant, Longstreet,(And his clashes with the Bloody Shirts, Adelbert Ames and so many brave reformers who rose to the challenge of knitting together forces that had formerly seemed like separate universes.Read elsewhere about Cassius Clay,(And his two Kentucky Suffragette daughters)Gen. William Mahone and the Re-Adjusters, Carl Schurz, August Willich, to enter the world beyond the big names/heroes of the era that gave birth to modernity the world over.
It may just be the headings, but there are consistent case-shift errors throughout the Kindle edition. It was disconcerting enough to be distracting. I did not read the entire book through to confirm.
