It's a great book for sure. It's a bit dry at first but you need to get over the hump of background information on the Teutonic Knights if you really want to get the meat and potatoes of this book. It's interesting to hear how the Teutons fought the Pagans of Eastern Europe and I love the way the battles are described in such detail (at least in terms of how the battles were planned by the order). I find the Teutonic Knights fascinating and I genuinely love reading about them in any form of literature or watching documentaries on them.This book gets a 4/5 because it's very dry at the beginning. I bought this book to get into the heads of the Grand Masters of the order so I could better understand their motives and plans as an order and the book does all of that well. It's just that the background is very long and unnecessary for me. I understand it's important to go into the history of the beginning of any historic group or order of knights in this case but I feel like the beginning could have been shortened to give us more passion into the ideals, beliefs, and tactics of the Teutons as a militaristic order of knights.Otherwise, it's a great book and Nicholas Morton has done a magnificent job at taking the role of a chronicler of the men who served this holy order. It's clear this book was made with love and dedication to the history of these monks and warriors of God. Definitely worth a buy!
This is the story of the third major Catholic Military Monastic Order (MMO) of the 12th Century formed from German hospitaliers during the 1190 siege of Acre in the Holy Land. It begins with the results from the Battle of Hattin 1187 and traverses through the fall of Acre in 1291. Nicholas Morton has written an outstanding historical account well researched and easy to read. If one thought the Levant was complicated through this period, the introduction of the 3rd major MMO championed by the Holy Roman Emperor causes exponential confusion.Morton spends considerable time - first half of book- discussing the formation of the Teutonic Knights (TK) and of the 1st Grand Master, Herman de Salza (1210-1239). The reader is treated to in-depth materials on the balancing act Herman conducted during this time with his two patrons, the papacy and empire. He is credited with the transformation of a small-scale military order into a major international religious institution.Chapter 9 provides information regarding the TK organizational structure. This information is a direct hand me down from Knights Templar and Knights of St. John (KSJ) regarding how these MMO where organized and function. It provides a view of what was not recorded in the former and scant in the latter. This book provides a wealth of information as to how the TK interacted with the older orders.Morton then moves one step further and reveals the commonality between the TK and KSJ then provides extensive differentiation between the orders, some due to the TK geographical commitments. Due to the fact the TK had two major foci of operations, Levant and Eastern Europe, to defend Western Christendom its character differed from the other orders considerably.The reader needs to keep in mind this is a primer on the TK from its inception to when it left the Holy Land through the same door it entered, Acre, and minimal material is found here relating to activities in Prussia and Lavonia.

This book was an awesome find and a worthy purchase. Mr Morton had already produced one book on the Military Orders of the Crusades which I found very enjoyable and full of well researched information. Now with this book, he goes a completely different direction regarding the history of the Teutonic Order. He focuses on their early years in the Holy Land. This is a piece of work that Military Orders enthusiasts must have in their library. It’s a perfect complement to the work of Urban and others, who tend to address the Teutonic Order’s efforts in Northern Europe.Gott ist mit ihnen.
