Dorney was a solid, dependable offensive lineman first for Penn State and then for the Detroit Lions, outfitted in "Honolulu blue," in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and this book is a solid look at his daily life as a professional football player, which will be enjoyable for the average fan. This is not by any means an expos‚; Dorney admits that what inspired him to write were his positive memories about "striving to play the best game possible with the same fierce intensity each and every week." Along the way, he details the brutality of the typical NFL summer camp; the gruesome nature of the dozen or so orthopedic operations he endured during his career; and the pleasure of searching for the "perfect hit" with which to clobber his opponents. He also provides looks at some of the characters he's crossed paths with over the years, most notably legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno. Two sections separate this title from a typically good but run-of-the-mill sports book and show Dorney's ability to move beyond cliches when he wants to. The first is a look at one of his typical football games written from the point-of-view of his wife in the stands. The second is an unabashedly sentimental account of a postretirement visit to the Lions locker room, which shows how much the game has changed even in the past 10 years. First, I was very impressed with Dorney`s honesty and style. I felt a connection to him. Maybe it's his ability to make me feel part of the club as a former player. I can relate to the injuries and chronic pain. After playing seven years as a running back, kick off and punt return man, I still feel many hits my body took. Back surgery, knee surgery and neck issues are the result. I can relate to the connections and bonds formed and as a proud Michigan resident and Lions fan. I can relate to the frustration of losing seasons. Thanks for the memories Keith Dorney and thanks for always giving it your best...
Well written. This provides and insiders look at the "trenches", the offensive line in the NFL. Any football fan wouldenjoy this insighful book. And he pulls no punches when talking about being on team (Detroit Lions) that loses moregames than it wins. And he has especially harsh words for the old Silverdome field and what it did to players.
I went into the Penn State book store at the Indiana game to buy a hat and I purchased this book, because after listening to this 2 time All-American from PSU / All-Pro Detroit Lion talk on the PSU radio show that morning, Keith sounded very articulate and I wanted to see if he wrote as well as he talked. Was I surprised! This book was not a book about how great a player he was, and he was a terrific player, but it showed, as the title states. "life in the trenches in the NFL." I felt like I was experiencing the nightmare of rookie camp, and how difficult it is for a player to adjust to football at the pro level. Keith talks about injuries, harsh playing conditions, what it is like to be a "big guy", and my favorite part of the game... the hitting. As a frustrated athlete who only played a little high school football, this book helped me expreience the rigors of football at the college and pro level. Oh yes, Penn State fans, he also has a chapter on Joe Pa, what it was like to play for him, and some inside stuff that the reader may not have heard. As other reviews have stated, this book is a must read for everyone, whether you are a fan or not, because it is well-written and deals with how to overcome obstacles in life and how to succeed by keeping a positive attitude in whatever you do. I signed on to Amazon to order 3 more for gifts. Great job Keith!
Keith shares with you his life and his love. As a man Keith bares his soul for everyone to look at and into, if you have the guts. Because looking into his, you've got to look into yours and that isn't always easy. Keith knows MOTIVATION, from the inside out and back again. He also teaches motivation to young students of the game and to executives at Fortune 500 companies. You will learn a lot about yourself reading this book. In fact you'll learn a lot about life, the ups, the downs, the joys, the pains, but more importantly what it means to get up off the ground one last time and keep going. Thank you Keith for writing this important work.
hey, i was in your thrid period english class in 2003-2004. I bought your book and had you sign it. now for senior year AP english 12 i'm finally going to read it!
When I was reading this book, I thought I was actually on the field and feeling the pain of myself getting tackled. It was a easy and fun book to read. It was extraordinarily hard for myself to put Black and Honolulu Blue down. I recommend this book not just for sports fans, but for book lovers of all kinds.
