Entertaining whodunit set in 1950's England. Body parts of a woman packed in what appear to be magician's trick boxes arrive at the police station. The addressee served with a special unit during World War II, the Magic Men, that included magicians. Then others in the unit are also targeted. What is the connection? Along the way to figuring this out, we are drawn into a recreation of the British pre-television variety show circuit. The labarynthine, but very well paced plot moves along easily. Appealing characters and some real surprises you won't see coming. Recommended
"The Zig Zag Girl," by Elly Griffiths, takes place largely in Brighton, England, in 1950, five years after the end of the war. Edgar Stephens, former Oxford student and WWII veteran, is now a detective inspector with the Brighton police, and he is given the case of the apparent murder of a young woman; apparent because only two parts of the body have been found. Soon, Edgar finds himself reunited with one of his war chums, a magician known as Max Mephisto, whom he had known as part of the Magic Men, a group stationed in Scotland and tasked with providing illusions of strength to fool the Nazis. When Edgar realizes that his work with the Magic Men and the increasing number of corpses piling up in Brighton and elsewhere are connected, it is up to him and Max to solve the puzzle before it’s too late…. Elly Griffiths is primarily known for her very entertaining Ruth Galloway series, so "The Zig Zag Girl" is a departure for her, but it is just as entertaining (and just as clearly the first book in a new series). The atmosphere of 1950s Brighton is well-described, and the characters are all engaging, with interesting histories and prospects. I was fairly sure that I knew who’d done it toward the end of the novel, but I wasn’t positive until just before the big reveal, which is a good measure of a well- done mystery novel; I look forward to the next story featuring Edgar, Max and their friends. Recommended!
3 StarsDetective Inspector Edgar Stephens is a detective in Brighton. He attends the scene at the morgue where body parts have been found. The rest of the body is mailed to him at the station. One of the other cops makes a comment about the woman’s “legs as long as a showgirl.†It makes Edgar wonder if the victim had something to do with show business.He contacts his old army buddy, Max Mephisto, a local magician and former Army buddy who both served in a unit called “The Magic Men†to see if he can add any sort of specialized knowledge. The Magic Men used props and stage tricks to confuse the enemy. Max tells Edgar that the body parts remind him of the Zig Zag girl trick. Max created the illusion.When the victim turns out to be Ethel, one of Max’s former assistants and a special friend, the murder turns out to be far more personal.This book spends a lot of time talking about the stage-related show business. Magicians, comics and a plethora of other show-types populate this book. It is both fascinating and entertaining.This book is not as good as the Ruth Galloway novels. It moved too slowly for me. And I found DI Stephens a little dull, not at all like Ruth Galloway. It is competently written and well plotted, but it just didn’t have the personal appeal that Ms. Griffiths’ Galloway books have. The characters were too bland. They didn’t have the depth or warmth of Ruth Galloway. I will read the next in the series in the hope that it picks up a little.
I am a huge fan of Elly Griffiths’s Ruth Galloway novels, so I was eager to try this newer series. I found The Zig Zag Girl to be a well-constructed mystery, and I enjoyed it. However, I did not find the characters as engaging as Ruth, Nelson, and Cathbad in the Ruth Galloway novels; and I didn’t find the historical context of this book made up for the loss of the great descriptions of the coastal setting in the Ruth Galloway novels. I also enjoy reading books with strong female characters; although some women play important roles in this particular plot, the story is told from the perspective of Edgar and Max, and they will be the continuing characters in the Magic Men Mysteries.
I enjoyed her previous series. Could not stand this one. Griffiths is a good writer but she is in over her head on time period. Lots of mistakesto the point where it crossed the line to fantasy. I did finish the book - my friend gave up at Chapter 6.
The mystery is engaging, but the real strength lies in the characters and the period setting, which almost seems like its own character. It is a time of transition, and everyone is trying to make sense of the past and face the future in their own way. It’s not comedic, though it has funny scenes, and it is not grim, though the murder(s) are pretty brutal – The Zig Zag Girl just has a very thoughtful tone that really pulled me in as a reader.
Elly Griffiths was touted as an up and coming author. "Zig Zag Girl" is the first in a series called 'the Magic Men". The book has little to do with the magic men and more to do with police officer DI Stephens, who the author portrays as inept, empathetic, and depressing. He doesn't solve the case, he just falls into the solution. All in all the story was 350 pages of boredom.
