Professor Dodson gives us more than simply the origins of Akhenaten's religious revolution in fourteenth century BCE Egypt. He revisits much of the material covered in his earlier work "Amarna Sunset" concerning the evident turmoil following Akhenaten's demise, i.e. the reigns of Smenkhkare, Neferneferuaten, Tutankhamen, Ay, and Horemheb, albeit with important updates noting the 2010 mummy DNA analysis and the recent discovery of evidence for Nefertiti surviving into the sixteenth year of her husband's reign. Dodson does not note the 2013 discovery of evidence in Asasif Tomb 28 for a long Akhenaten coregency with his father Amenhotep III (for Dodson's thoughts on this subject see: KMT, Summer 2014, pp. 19-35).The first part of "Sunrise" is a helpful and quite thorough compilation of the surviving artifacts of the Thutmosid Dynasty beginning with Ahmos I through the reign of Akhenaten's father Amenhotep III. Dodson stilll believes that the shadowy Neferneferuaten was actually Nefertiti in a new role, and that Akhenaten & Nefertiti were Tutankhuaten's parents, while a very good case can be made that Neferneferuaten was Nefertiti's daughter Meryetaten, and Tutankhuaten was the son of Smenkhkare (Akkhenaten's younger brother) who we know was married to Meryetaten.Many of the black and white illustrations are dim, unfocused, or miniscule, but the book is valuable to Amarna students, and Professor Dodson, as usual, is careful and tentative in his speculations and interpretations.
I'm a big fan of Aidan Dodson's work, and was glad to see this "prequel" to his "Amarna Sunset". This is a very confusing time in ancient Egyptian history, made more so by the fragmentary nature of the surviving evidence. All of which makes it fascinating, since there will never be a definitive answer. I enjoy hearing the different theories about the "why" of Akhenaten's actions - well, except for the way out there crackpots - and Aidan Dodson does a good job of distilling the current evidence and speculation into something understandable. What I found most interesting was his idea that makes Nefertiti possible as Tutankamon's mother - if Akhenaten and Nefertiti were 1st cousins, then DNA results on the mummy ID'd as Tut's mother would be the same as if they were siblings. (Akenaten being the son of Queen Tiye and Nefertiti being the daughter of Tiye's brother.)
Easy to understand and appreciate good source of materials.
What a disappointing book. Its organization was nearly non-existent, jumping around through time with no discernible progression. 75% of the way through, I finally gave up since I was unable to sustain any further interest, despite my great interest in Egyptian history. It read less like a narrative than a collection of footnote text strung together.

An interesting review of the beginning of the Amarna regime.
If you are interested in the period and can only read a couple of books, then I recommend Aidan Dodson's work; he's diligent about facts vs speculation, and he presents a staggering amount of data more or less comprehensibly. I notice that one reviewer didn't catch on to the organization of the book: chronological then thematic through each reign or period. There really doesn't seem to be a better way considering the nature of the evidence.As another reviewer noted, Dodson doesn't give much weight to a long co-regency with his father and this is likely an error as it seems that the line of force of the other evidence he does present about the activities from the Heb-sed on would suggest such. Also, if the mummy of Amenhotep III is really him, his health did not appear to be very good and that would support the idea that he needed the ruling support of a co-regency. But I'm not going to fault him on that because it really is a minor point and only a matter of 8 years, so not a "long" co-regency, exactly.As to the DNA evidence of the family relationships, I'm definitely on Dodson's side. I've thought that Akhenaten and Nefertiti were the parents of Tut for years now; anybody with eyes looking at the art representations can see it (even taking style into account). Tut looks like his sisters and they all look like their parents. The girls look more like the father and the son looks more like the mother.Dodson's theory about the survival of Nefertiti and her taking the role of Queen regent in a difficult transitional situation is quite plausible and, as he points out, a refraction of this idea persisted into the work of Manetho.All in all, as I said, if you can only read a couple of books on the topic, read Dodson's because he's really piled the data together in the most organized way possible as far as I can see without making the text 900 pages or more. You'll quickly understand why so many crank theories are simply rubbish while, at the same time, there are some furiously interesting mysteries still lurking in the story! Except for the co-regency, I think his educated speculations that he holds to a bare minimum are excellent. A lot made sense to me after reading this book!
I am only halfway through this wonderful book aand can already recommend it. It is filled with very helpful photos and illustrations in the greatest detail I've ever seen in a book about Akhetaten here at my fingertips. The text is serious and detailed in its explanation of the events, art, biography and history of the reign of Akhenaten. It also has the advantage of being recently published and so its data is strictly up to date. Be sure to consider adding this fine book of Dr. Dodson to your library.
