DK Eyewitness Travel makes great travel guides, including this latest (2017) edition on Mexico. It features plenty of color pictures, maps and diagrams in a well-organized survey of Mexico's tourist spots. There is lots of practical information on what to see, and at least some offerings on where to stay and what to eat. Mexico has thousands of years of history on offer, and much natural beauty in its varied terrain, from beaches to mountains to high desert to tropical forest. The cut away diagrams of Mexico's many surviving pre-Columbian ancient monuments and colonial cathedrals were especially interesting to this reviewer. The guide has a good long introductory essay on the history of Mexico, and extensive coverage of Mexico City. The rest of the chapters orient on geographic regions of the country. The text includes practical tips on good shopping and where to get the best bargains. The travel advice also includes cautions on crime and on dealing with the police, which may perhaps understate the case unless the traveler is staying in a self-sufficient resort. Mexico is a large country, and one guide cannot be expected to cover all of it equally well. Recommended as an excellent introductory guide for the first time visitor.

I have been traveling to Mexico, especially Puerto Vallarta, for 26 years now. I'll be driving through Mexico later this year and thought the guidebook would be handy for excursions we haven't taken as of yet. What turned me off was the lack of current, edited information. For instance, in regards to hotels or resorts that are available in the Puerto Vallarta area, the Molino de Agua hasn't been around for a minimum of 5 years! The hotel and tropical grounds were bulldozed for new construction to build oceanview condos and anyone with minimal experience in the Puerto Vallarta area is well aware of this fact.I'm afraid there were other instances of the same type of misinformation which is disheartening considering I typically love Eyewitness Travel Guides and find them very useful. Perhaps the information hasn't been edited/updated in many more years than it states at the beginning of the book or the date listed for the most recent edit was a simple mistake. Either way, the information is not current and therefore not helpful.
Love these guides. Out family has over 30 of them from our travels around the world. We find them to be a great mix of bright splashy photos and sage advice. This isn't the guide to get for existing on a budget or find the corner hole pub that NO ONE knows about. This is the guide to read, understand, get easy assistance and make the most of some family time or extended travel time in MEX. Bravo... as always.
I bought this guide for a recent trip to Mexico that included 3 days in Mexico City and a week in the Yucatan. The book helped us plan our trip in the Yucatan, with good information on small towns and recommended sights in them . We tried a couple of the recommended restaurants, and they were good. The colorful images give you a sense of what to expect, and the walking tours with their detailed maps and directions are informative. One of the features that stood out for me are the good layout maps of the archaeological sites such as Chichen Itza and Izamal, with snippet descriptions of the key structures - by no means exhaustive, but adequate. Despite the breadth that it covers, the book often surprises you with details of specific locations, for e.g. the layout and highlights of the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Overall, happy with the purchase. This was the only guide I used, so I cannot speak for how it compares to other guides.
I've used Eyewitness guides for about 10 years. I quite like the way they are organized. Strong points of these guides include:(1) Historical timeline; key points identified with good breadth & depth(2) Traveler's Survival Guide section has accurate & helpful information(3) Wonderful walking guides with three-dimensional maps so that one does not overlook the not-to-be missed sites, monuments, buildings, works of art, cultural highlights, etc.(4) Well-organized into provinces and major sections of cities that help trememdously in mazimizing time so that one is not back-tracking or wandering hither and yon.(5) Many good color photos and illustrations of major attractionsMy one major dissatisfaction is that no phonetic pronunciation of cities, attractions, historical figures, etc. is included. That one small feature would be tremendously helpful and appreciated.
I liked best the info on the country and it ‘s history. I wish there was more info on Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine.
Excellent source for history and travel information. I always buy an Eyewitness Travel book when I'm planning to travel. Beautiful photos, historical timelines and thorough information. Even if you aren't planning to travel these books are perfect for an armchair traveler too.
