Honestly, this is the best landscaping book I've ever seen. It was given to me as a gift and I liked it so much I ordered one as a gift for someone else. I always wanted a "backyard paradise" but never understood how to express what I wanted. This book is beautifully printed with high quality color photographs and it walks you through every step from figuring out what you want, to laying out the design, to precise details on how to do the work yourself (if you wish).
This book goes into just the right amount of detail. It doesn't get too technical, but just enough to answer most of the questions of why you are reading the book. Tons of great inspirational landscapes and pictures throughout. I'm glad I purchased it! I'm always thinking of new designs and this book helped me out by allowing me to visualize different styles all in one place.
Best investment for landscape design. This book gives you ideas to build in your backyard and informs you with many plant species and information regarding type of soil, how much to water your plants, what types of plants to grow according to your territory etc.
SO many pictures, clear descriptions, great details.....wonderful useful book! Great addition to gardening library.
There’s no denying this 390 page book is crammed full of beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately, not many photos seem geared toward the average homeowner like me. Encyclopedia of Landscape Design contains chapters on how to design, choose a style, make a garden and a plants and materials guide. What I see on most pages are very overcrowded plant groupings (all at the peak of bloom, so yes, they do look beautiful) and very intensive maintenance. That’s exactly the opposite of what I am seeking while planning our next landscape design project. I know readers are simply supposed to glean ideas from this book, but I found most of the photos to be very extravagant and somewhat pretentious.There’s just too much vague information crammed into this coffee-table style book that’s actually useful. The plant guide offers a smattering of attractive photos and snippets of info about a variety of trees and plants, but then entirely omits critical planting zone designations for them. That gorgeous shrub photo you just fell in love with might not grow in the Midwest. The “Making A Garden†chapter shows many building techniques, but I’d be very hesitant to follow such basic steps without consulting additional sources as well.Unfortunately, I didn’t get many ideas from this beautiful encyclopedia. Minimalist landscape designs take just as much planning as the busy, overcrowded planting ideas I mainly saw and read about in this book. My suggestion—check Encyclopedia Of Landscape Design out of the library before making an actual purchase, or look into specific landscape topics rather than purchase one big encyclopedia full of hodgepodge information. It is the first time I have been disappointed in a DK publication.
