I do not know why there are any negative reviews of this workbook. I have been searching high and low for a comprehensive workbook for geography/maps. Many of the materials I found were inadequate. I use this workbook for a wide range of ages from seven to sixteen.It does begin on an elementary level and builds from there. I am glad it incorporates some orienteering. The students make their own maps, follow directions, use a compass rose and do a small project on making a compass.The workbook is laid out in sections.Section 1: Introduction to Maps and Map Skills - Floor Plans, Map Keys, Map Routes, Compasses, City/State/National Maps, Map Scales and Population Maps.Section 2: United States Geography- Introduction to the U.S. and States, Boundaries and Rivers, Kinds of Maps: Political, Physical, Product and Climate Maps.Section 3: United States Regions- Pacific, Mountain, North Central, South Central, Midwest, Northeastern and Southeastern States.Section 4: North and South America- Introduction to North and South America, Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America.Section 5: Grid MapsSection 6: Global Geography- The Globe, Continents and Oceans, Hemispheres, Meridians of Longitude, Lines of Latitude, Latitude and Longitude and Time Zones.Lastly, Maps and Geography Review Sheets.Typically, when evaluating Geography educational materials the focus is either on U.S. Geography or World Geography. It is difficult to find a workbook that encompasses orienteering, city, state and national maps, specialized maps, neighborhood maps, state maps, continent maps, and longitude and latitude. I am writing this review to save you from having to spend hours searching for something you just can't find anywhere else. This workbook is educational and the student feedback is A+! They are always excited to do Maps & Geography.
This is one of several supplementary workbooks I got for my daughter when I was homeschooling her for part of her 3rd grade year. There are a ton of worksheets in here, as it is meant to be useable for more then one grade. Clearly, we didn't finish all of them. But the ones we did use, she actually enjoyed doing them. I felt like the explanations on the sheets was adequate. I also felt like it would provide support for grades above the 3rd grade. I didn't have any trouble navigating the sections, but it is a large book that has a lot of different sheets in it, so I would recommend removing the sheets you've completed so you don't have to keep flipping through them as you look for the next thing.
This seems like a great intro to geography, and I feel confident that my son will have a good understanding of the basics by the time we finish this book. We have only done the first few pages, and I know it gets more advanced further into it, but I can't imagine a 6th grader enjoying a lot of this. My son is eight and he is loving the fun and colorful way this book starts teaching, but I think most children over 10 would find it babyish. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to give their child an intro to geography in a fun and easy way.
I purchased this book for homeschooling my two kids (grades 4 and 6). I really think it was a bit young for them, especially my 6th grader. I would recommend this for grades 3-4. For us I think it was a little too simple and baby-ish. The information however is accurate and easy to use.
It covers a wide range of map skills from easy to challenging. I used this with my 6th grade class, and since they had very little practice with map skills, the 3rd grade practice sheets were what many of them needed to start on before moving on to the 6th grade level. The pages don't say what grade level they are, but each skill moves progressively from easy to difficult. The worksheets are fairly short and easy to check together in class.
I have my fifth grade daughter working on this workbook. It covers everything from how to read maps, to the United States of America, to the continents and countries around the world. It's very colorful, and my daughter doesn't mind working on it, which is a lot say about a maps and geography book.
This book is correctly titled The COMPLETE book of Maps and Geography. As a homeschool mom I was looking for something that would cover what my 3rd graders need to know with regards to Geography. This will do it, from the compass rose and map symbols to state geography and then world geography. Looking through this book brings back many memories of grade school for me and things I have forgotten over the years. It will certainly make my job easier. The activities are very hands on and engaging. There is no getting bored with this book. I can't wait to start using it. As a previous reviewer said you could easily make this book last for 2 years, making it even more of a value than it already is. Homeschool curriculum is so expensive and this is a great find.
I home school my boys--one in 3rd grade and one in 5th grade. This book is awesome. I have a strong belief that a child will retain a lot more information when he is enjoying school so I am always on the lookout for quality books which my kids enjoy which also have good text and information. This book is it. Activity pages make them think and the illustrations are fun. It starts with easier lessons and goes up to harder ones so I can use the same book for both grades.
